The Upside of Lockdown

Lockdown may have been a very distressing and depressing time for most people around the country but there were also positives that came from the coronavirus.

Ben Evans, 18, from Sutton, was, like many other A Level students, unable to sit his exams in the summer because of lockdown. Prime Minister Boris Johnson cancelled the exams process, which left many students wondering how their grades would be decided.

Students were outraged by the government algorithm that had been used to decide the grades. The algorithm, which caused thousands of students to be downgraded, seemed to be unfairly biased towards private schools and discriminate against state schools.

Education Secretary Gavin Williamson said there would be no U-turn on exam results, only for their to be one, with students now being awarded their teachers' predictions. Eton-schooled Johnson blamed the 'mutant' algorithm for the problems caused.

"A lot of students were screwed over with their exam results," Ben explains. "I was fortunate to not be affected in the same way other students were."

Ben was awarded A*A*A in Further Maths, Geography and History to go along with the A* in Maths he secured last summer by actually sitting the paper. Now at UCL studying Maths, lockdown created hardship for many peoples' careers but it is good to see a state-schooled pupil progressing well in spite of our shambolic government.
