Chelsea beat Arsenal 2-1 the last time the side met thanks to a late Tammy Abraham goal after Arsenal had been winning for the majority of the match.
The Frank Lampard honeymoon period seems to be over. Another disappointing result against a side Chelsea should be beating and in a game that they dominated. Newcastle snatched a late winner right at the end and Tammy Abraham will perhaps feel he should've done better. Abraham started the season brilliantly but only has 3 goals in his last 10 league matches. The team largely depend upon him for goals so it is no surprise that there has been a downturn in results since Abraham has stopped scoring regularly.
This Chelsea side features a lot of young players in their first season for a club as big as Chelsea so they will not be able to be firing on all cylinders from August to May. There will be periods when they dip and that is the case, especially with Mason Mount who has 1 goal in his last 15 league matches. Lampard has been applauded for his use of young players but his appointment was for that reason as Chelsea had a transfer ban so Abramovich was always going to get someone who the fans would unite behind in a what could've been a potentially poor season, and Lampard was the obvious choice.
In the reverse fixture, Lampard got his tactics wrong and took Emerson off for Jorginho after 34 minutes which worked wonderfully. Chelsea were being overrun in midfield so bringing on a defensive midfield was an intelligent tactical move to make up for his initial error. Their poor start with 5 at the back the last time will surely see Lampard line up with a 4 and Jorginho just in front.
Mikel Arteta's first home match in charge was against Chelsea and it was an impressive performance even though the result was not. The revival of certain players under the Spaniard that had been not trying under Unai Emery has been crucial, with Lucas Torreira the best example. It is well known that Torreira was glad Emery was sacked and since Arteta has come in, the Uruguayan has shown the same energy, pressing and tackling ability that made him a fans' favourite this time last season.
Arsenal have only lost one fixture since Arteta's appointment and that was against Chelsea. Last time out against Sheffield United it was a game in which they should've won. Sheffield United did not play up to their usual standards and, although Nicolas Pepe should've had a clear penalty, Arsenal dominated enough to win. Missing captain and top scorer Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will hurt their attacking play but Alexandre Lacazette is a player who can easily step into his shoes and deliver.
As previously stated, Arsenal were unfortunate not to record a victory against Chelsea, even more so that they lost. Aubameyang is a big loss but so is Reece James for Chelsea, another youngster who has impressed when given the opportunity. Azpilicueta doesn't offer the same attacking threat as James nor is as fast which is a useful asset when playing as a full back.
1-1 draw.
