Liverpool may have rescued victory in added time but in truth, it should've been a lot more comfortable. Sadio Mane gave the home side a deserved lead but James Maddison equalised for Leicester in the second half. It seemed like a draw was going to happen but James Milner, as cool as you like, scored from the spot to win Liverpool the game.
The first half was all Liverpool. Salah had a chance saved easily by Schmeichel and Milner struck over as the Reds tried to make their dominance pay. They could have been down to 10 men when Alexander-Arnold caught Tielemans on his Achilles but VAR said no. Liverpool were finally rewarded with a goal as Milner found Mane with a brilliantly weighted pass and the Senegalese forward slotted past Schmeichel. A thoroughly deserved goal.
It was expected that Liverpool would be in control of the match but that control lead to complacency, much like against Salzburg in midweek. Jurgen Klopp's side had a total 18 attempts but failed to create any clear cut chances in the second half. Leicester almost equalised when a low drive from Praet whistled passed Adrian's post but the Foxes did get their goal as Perez played in Maddison, who I said would be influential, and his shot went in. Adrian should've done much better with the effort but Brendan Rodgers was now smiling back at Anfield.
Jurgen Klopp knew a draw wouldn't be good enough but it seemed like it was heading that way. Or was it? In the dying minutes Marc Albrighton was adjudged to have tripped Sadio Mane in the penalty box. It was a soft penalty but VAR was never likely to overrule Chris Kavanagh's decision. Milner calmly passed the ball into the net and got Liverpool the all important three points.
Tempers flared at the end between Perez and Robertson and that says it all about how important this fixture was. Liverpool are now eight points clear (with Manchester City yet to play) and Leicester remain in 3rd for now. The international break will see Liverpool stay top and another win in their seventeen match streak.
