The Big Match Revisited - Manchester City vs Tottenham Hotspur

Where to start with this one? We knew VAR would have a big impact on the Premier League this season but my goodness what an important twist it has caused in the title race already.

Manchester City were good value for their lead when Sterling headed them in front, assisted by a tremendous De Bruyne cross. They should have had increased their lead but were pegged back when Tottenham scored through Erik Lamela - their first touch.

City could have had a penalty before they scored when Lamela seemed to pull down Rodri in the box but that didn't worry them as they kept up their standards and went ahead again. Aguero scoring after another De Bruyne cross. Tottenham lacked any attacking intent and were atrocious in defence.

Bernardo Silva missed City's best chance to score a third in the early stages of the second half. Spurs made a sub and Lucas Moura, with his first touch, headed home from a corner. From two attempts, Tottenham had scored two goals.

It was backs to the wall stuff from Tottenham for the remainder of the match but in truth, Manchester City deserved to and should have won the match. It seemed like they had when in injury time, Gabriel Jesus scored and Liverpool had lost (😀).

But no? Remember VAR? The goal was ruled out due to a handball from Aymeric Laporte. I don't like VAR at all and its presence has made the handball rule even worse. There's no way that is handball without VAR's introduction making the rule even more ridiculous.

Exactly four months on from their VAR fueled Champions League tie, Manchester City were denied against Tottenham again by VAR.

City have now dropped points for the first time in 15 league matches but Tottenham earn a great point for themselves. VAR will no doubt have a say in many more matches across the season, but it only makes football worse, and that was shown today. Simple as that.
