Liverpool 2-0 Tottenham - 2018/19 Champions League Final Review

Congratulations to Liverpool who have won their 6th Champions League title and commiserations to Spurs. In truth, this final lacked real quality and will not be remembered as one of the greats, unless you're a Liverpool fan.

Things started as bad as they could for Tottenham. Not even 1 minute on the clock, Liverpool were awarded a penalty after Sissoko handled in the area and Mo Salah, 12 months on from injury in the final, duely obliged and put Liverpool ahead. Tottenham bossed possession for the entire game but both sides were still sloppy, misplacing many passes. There could be a number of factors for this, including the 3 week break and temperature in Madrid. Either way, both sides struggled and did not threaten the opposing goalkeeper.

Tottenham started the second half brightly but once again lacked any killer pass in the final third. Firmino lasted less than an hour, replaced by Origi, but it was the second substitute - Milner - that almost doubled Liverpool's lead, dragging a shot just wide of the post. Liverpool were playing poorly but still seemed more dangerous when attacking. The Spurs surge did eventually come but Alisson, my man of the match, was equal to every chance. He saved shots from Son, Moura and Eriksen expertly. The contrasting performances between Liverpool's goalkeepers in the last two finals says a lot. Spurs continued to push but Liverpool forced a corner and when Tottenham failed to clear, Divock Origi drilled home to give Liverpool the victory.

This game was awful in terms of quality. For Klopp, he now removes the label of having not won a trophy but I'm as pleased for Jordan Henderson - a man who has been ridiculed unfairly over the past years has now lifted the Champions League as captain. For Pochettino, he still has the label of having not won a trophy but Spurs were not expected to reach the final and their journey to Madrid shows the progression of the club that their supporters can be proud of.

Liverpool now face Chelsea in the UEFA Super Cup and will also be in the Club World Cup in December, as competition they have never won.
