Today draws an end to the 2018/19 Premier League season. A lot has happened this season, some good, some bad but nonetheless, it's been an extremely exciting season and there's still places to be decided by the last game. Of course, the champions will be crowned today and there's still a slim possibility Arsenal can make top 4. Read below to find out exactly what has to happen today for your team.
CHAMPIONS
The two horse race between Manchester City and Liverpool has been on-going from the first whistle in August. Manchester City led all the way until December before Liverpool surpassed them, but City responded and have been the pace setters ever since March. Liverpool have defiantly stuck with Manchester City and are only 1 point behind and could even finish with 97 points and not win the league. That is absurd but testament to this great Manchester City side (obviously FFP and all that but hey!)
For Manchester City to win the league...
they must equal (or better) Liverpool's result.
For Liverpool to win the league...
they must win and hope Manchester City draw or lose to Brighton.
TOP FOUR
It was widely expected Manchester City and Liverpool would be ahead of the rest of the Top 6, so it was up to Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham and Manchester United to battle it out for the remaining two places. Tottenham were actually in the title race come March but an awful run of form led to them falling away. Arsenal were 3rd a couple of games ago but losing three games in a row meant they bottled it. Manchester United were so far away when Mourinho was sacked, Solskjaer brought them close and then they went away to the Europa League. Chelsea, despite Sarri having a supposedly bad season, have definitely come 3rd so will have Champions League next season. The Top 4 race is between Arsenal and Tottenham.
For Tottenham to get Top 4...
they must equal (or better) Arsenal's result.
For Arsenal to get Top 4...
they must win and hope Spurs lose in an 8-goal swing.
It seems highly likely that Manchester City will win their 4th Premier League title and Tottenham will qualify for Champions League. All hope is not lost for Arsenal as winning the Europa League will mean Champions League football but they face London rivals Chelsea in the final in Baku. Liverpool may finish 2nd but they still have the Champions League final against Tottenham in a couple of weeks.
Despite everything looking clear, this week in football has shown nothing is ever certain, so expect a lot of thrills and spills along the way today.
