The North West Derby. Liverpool and Manchester United. The biggest match in English football. The Merseyside club are riding high knowing a win against their arch rivals will put them back on top. United, on the other hand, will be 19 points behind Liverpool if the Reds walk away with three points. A win would also mark Jurgen Klopp's first Premier League win over Manchester United as Liverpool boss and it would be Liverpool's first for over four years.
It's quite remarkable that Liverpool have not beaten United for four seasons. They have managed three draws but Manchester United have picked up five wins in that time. This is in part down to Mourinho's tactic to park the bus. It has yielded much more success for United and simply boring matches with Mourinho never losing to Klopp as Red Devils manager. But you have to think Sunday will be different.
Everything points to a Liverpool win. Unbeaten in the league. Home advantage. A club that is united. Rather ironically, Manchester United have been anything but united this season. Mourinho's problems with the board and the results have put his job into doubt. A loss to Liverpool could be the final nail in the coffin.
Mourinho has been on thin ice since the start of the season. Disputes over transfers meant the club faced such negativity before a ball had been kicked. The results have been below par for a team of ilk of Manchester United. Losses to Brighton, West Ham and in the Manchester Derby plus disappointing draws at the hands of Wolves, Palace and Southampton have culminated in fans wanting Mourinho out.
It's ultimately Mourinho's defensive style of play at fault. Defensive football has no place in modern day football. Teams attack so incisively that they can expose sides that defend like Manchester United. The slow, patient, boring football has been the arch nemesis of United fans that long for the Fergie days of entertaining attacking play. United have arguably been at their best when they have to chase games and attack, like against Newcastle and Chelsea.
Liverpool are just too good. The attack of Mane, Firmino and Salah will destroy the United defence. The only problem will be right back. With Alexander-Arnold a doubt, Gomez injured and Clyne not fully fit, the ever reliable and versatile James Milner may have to be called upon. It could be an area United choose to exploit, if they choose to attack and not just sit back.
I predict a 3-0 Liverpool win.
Predicted Liverpool XI: Alisson; Milner, Lovren, Van Dijk, Robertson; Fabinho, Henderson, Keita; Mane, Firmino, Salah
Predicted United XI: De Gea; Young, Smalling, Bailly, Shaw; Fellaini, Pogba, Matic; Rashford, Lingard, Lukaku
